Are you a budding storyteller entering Year 7 in September 2013? Then this competition is for you!

Dauntsey’s School, in association with the Telegraph Bath Children’s Literature Festival, is launching a creative writing competition called ‘Lexicon’. All ‘Lexicon’ entries will be judged by Dauntsey’s English Department, working with award-winning author, and the festival’s Guest Artistic Director, David Almond. Prize winners will receive £50 in book tokens and a further £250 of tokens for their school.

The theme of the competition is ‘My Exciting Discovery’, and entrants will need to write no more than 200 words about discovering an object from the past. This could be something as small as a coin, or as dramatic as a king’s sword. You will need to describe the object, and your thoughts and feelings at the time you found the object.

The judges will be looking for pieces that are characterised by:

  • Imaginative ideas
  • Interesting and effective vocabulary
  • A sense of structure

If you wish to enter then please submit entries in one of the following ways:

  • by email to info@dauntseys.org and enter ‘My Exciting Discovery’ in the subject heading or
  • by post to The English Department (My Exciting Discovery), Dauntsey’s School, West Lavington, Devizes, Wiltshire SN10 4HE.

Entries should be submitted by Monday 23rd September 2013. It would be helpful if the work could be word processed, but this is not essential.

For further information head over to the Dauntsey’s website.
