The festival, once again, brought together some of the world\u2019s leading writers, musicians and cultural figures, for all to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>Audiences of over\u00a0<strong>37,000<\/strong>\u00a0paid to see events across the 17 days, which was\u00a0<strong>70%<\/strong>\u00a0up on 2017. The music event sales, not including the finale weekend, were the best since 2004.\u00a0<strong>12,000<\/strong>\u00a0day and weekend tickets were sold for the finale party on the Rec with audiences of nearly\u00a0<strong>9,000<\/strong>\u00a0on both days.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Bath BID<\/strong>\u00a0monitoring of footfall data measured an increase in high street footfall of\u00a0<strong>39%<\/strong>\u00a0across the festival finale weekend compared to the same weekend in 2017.\u00a0 There was a\u00a0<strong>15%<\/strong>\u00a0increase in high street footfall on Bath\u2019s biggest night of free music &#8211; Party in the City &#8211; which took place on 18<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0May, bringing\u00a0<strong>20,000<\/strong>\u00a0to the free concerts and events in the streets, parks and 34+ venues across the city.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Collaborations and Partnerships<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/c94ccc03a451dcb08965d086d\/images\/a95ff39b-a836-48ad-9d20-15983a0d8ca1.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The festival benefitted hugely from collaborations with organisations and individuals. Partnerships included\u00a0<strong>Bath Spa University\u2019s SparkFest,<\/strong>\u00a0an innovative programme of theatre, music and dance;<strong>\u00a0Bath City FC<\/strong>, for a day of football fun for all the family;\u00a0<strong>FilmBath<\/strong>\u00a0to celebrate the centenary of women\u2019s suffrage with film, literature, politics, music and comedy; and the\u00a0<strong>School of Advanced Study at the University of London<\/strong>\u00a0who created the concept of a multisensory evening of Living Literature that immersed the audience in the world of Mary Shelley\u2019s Frankenstein.\u00a0 The festival\u2019s partnership with\u00a0<strong>Bath BID<\/strong>\u00a0resulted in a tremendous amount of support from Bath\u2019s retailers, through advertising in shop windows, online engagement and a blogger day that created a real festival buzz, far and wide.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Literature and Music Highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/c94ccc03a451dcb08965d086d\/images\/132bec3f-e1bb-46ef-b39c-e39f9dca549f.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s literature programme was praised for its\u00a0<strong>diverse<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>stimulating<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>thought-provoking content<\/strong>. From codebreakers to dressage, from Russia to France to America, from the mists of history to the most urgent contemporary debates, it brought informed discussion and enticing entertainment in the shape of our best and brightest writers.<\/p>\n<p>The music programme offered a number of exclusive events.\u00a0<strong>Roman Rabinovich<\/strong>, performed all of Haydn\u2019s sparkling and charming piano sonatas over 10 concerts;\u00a0<strong>Roderick Williams<\/strong>, chose Bath as the location for his first festival of Schubert\u2019s three great song cycles and celebrated cellist,\u00a0<strong>Sheku Kanneh-Mason<\/strong>\u00a0came directly from his performance at the Royal Wedding, to appear in the festival\u2019s Concert for the People of Bath, alongside BBC Cardiff Singer of the World,\u00a0<strong>Catriona Morison<\/strong>.\u00a0 As well as a stunning performance in the Assembly Rooms,\u00a0<strong>Spira Mirabilis<\/strong>\u00a0took to the streets, playing on Milsom Street, Abbey Churchyard and Southgate to delighted passers-by. Amanda Palmer provided a powerful opening to the Anniversary Festival year with a series of concerts that featured the voices of\u00a0<strong>Ladysmith Black Mambazo<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Mary Chapin Carpenter<\/strong>, culminating in a spectacular concert by\u00a0<strong>Ben Folds<\/strong>, who persuaded 1300 residents of Bath to sing in perfect and spontaneous four-part harmony.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Creative Learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/c94ccc03a451dcb08965d086d\/images\/3d7a65a4-3db1-4fc6-87d1-e3de1ca0b64d.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We placed our charitable work with young people at the heart of this years festival, showcasing creative work performed by young people as part of\u00a0<strong>Bath Festivals\u2019 Creative Learning programme.\u00a0<\/strong>Our\u00a0partnership with\u00a0<strong>Paper Nations<\/strong>, created a display of stories and poems by children across the city. This year\u2019s commission in Bath Abbey saw local school children dressed as \u2018Festival Spirits\u2019 team up with soprano\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Karani<\/strong>, composer\u00a0<strong>Richard Barnard<\/strong>\u00a0and artist\u00a0<strong>Edwina Bridgeman<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Wiltshire Music Centre<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>The Bath Festival<\/strong>\u00a0jointly created a concert performance of one of the greatest of all musicals, West Side Story, building on a visionary large scale schools\u2019 project designed around the timeless themes of the musical.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finale Weekend<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/c94ccc03a451dcb08965d086d\/images\/f8bbc511-03e4-4c83-b3d4-cdb9b2ed5bad.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 70<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary finale weekend on Bath Recreation Ground did not disappoint.\u00a0<strong>Sophie Ellis-Bextor<\/strong>\u00a0not only performed her well-known hits on the main stage but also appeared in the Poet\u2019s Corner tent with her mother,\u00a0<strong>Janet Ellis<\/strong>, to talk about their favourite children\u2019s books.\u00a0<strong>Alison Moyet\u00a0<\/strong>stunned the audience with her incredible voice &#8211; this was a special one-off gig for the festival. Saturday closed with the one and only\u00a0<strong>Paloma Faith<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; the Queen of Glam, with her powerful voice set against ripples of thunder in the distance but the rain held off.\u00a0 On the Sunday,\u00a0<strong>Seth Lakeman<\/strong>\u00a0performed in the Big Top to huge applause and then also alongside\u00a0<strong>Robert Plant<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Midge Ure<\/strong>\u00a0sang classics such as \u2018Dancing With Tears In My Eyes\u2019 and \u2018Vienna\u2019 with the audience dancing, clapping and singing along.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Imelda May<\/strong>added a touch of rockabilly revival to the evening with her unique vocal talent and a weekend of wall-to-wall sunshine, set against the beautiful backdrop of Bath Abbey, ended with an unforgettable performance by\u00a0<strong>Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters<\/strong>.
