{"id":3002,"date":"2015-10-01T12:30:22","date_gmt":"2015-10-01T12:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bathfestivals.org.uk\/childrens-literature\/2015\/10\/01\/bathkidslitfest-day-7-are-we-obliged-to-write-good-role-models\/"},"modified":"2015-10-01T12:30:24","modified_gmt":"2015-10-01T12:30:24","slug":"bathkidslitfest-day-7-are-we-obliged-to-write-good-role-models","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bathfestivals.org.uk\/childrens-literature\/2015\/10\/01\/bathkidslitfest-day-7-are-we-obliged-to-write-good-role-models\/","title":{"rendered":"#BathKidsLitFest Day 7: Are we obliged to write good role models?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re not sure what to read next it\u2019s always good to go on someone else\u2019s recommendation, and who better to suggest a great read than <strong>Gill McLay,<\/strong> artistic co-director of <a href=\"http:\/\/bathfestivals.org.uk\"><strong>The Telegraph Bath Children&#8217;s Festival<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 <strong>Bath Picks<\/strong>, the initiative that she and <strong>John McLay<\/strong>, co-director (and husband) launched this year celebrates authors whose voices just have to be heard.<\/p>\n<p>And so we have <strong>Sarah Crossan, Virginia Bergin and Sarah Benwell<\/strong> in conversation on stage at the Mission Theatre.\u00a0 We get a reading from the novels showcased, <strong>Crossan\u2019s <em>One, <\/em>Bergin\u2019s <em>The Storm<\/em>, the sequel to <em>The Rain<\/em>, and Benwell\u2019s <em>The Last Leaves Falling<\/em>,<\/strong> and a lively discussion about the themes that emerge from these three compellingly original Young Adult books.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bathfestivals.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/10\/Apple-and-Rain-cover.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6621 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bathfestivals.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Apple-and-Rain-cover-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"'Apple and Rain' cover\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>One<\/em> is Crossan\u2019s fifth novel.\u00a0 Like her prize-winning book <em>The Weight of Water<\/em>, it\u2019s written in free verse.\u00a0 It\u2019s the story of conjoined twins, Grace and Tippi, who have been taught at home for most of their lives.\u00a0 But that\u2019s all about to change. The world intrudes when they go to school and have to come to terms with a whole host of issues \u2013 love, separation, identity and the usual stuff that teenagers go through.<\/p>\n<p>Crossan wrote 30,000 words in prose before realizing that Grace\u2019s voice came through so much stronger when written in verse.\u00a0 Hours of research in the British Library and lengthy conversations with the leading surgeon who operates on conjoined twins have resulted in a remarkable story that twists and turns, dancing the fine line between tragedy and comedy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6620 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bathfestivals.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/The-Last-Leaves-Falling-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Last Leaves Falling\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bergin confesses that Ruby, the fifteen-year-old heroine of her sequel took over the whole story whether she wanted her to or not.\u00a0 \u201cRuby just rocked up,\u201d she says.\u00a0 \u201cI had no idea that she was there.\u00a0 But her voice started and then she would just not shut up!\u201d Bergin\u2019s inspiration for her two related novels came from <em>New Scientist<\/em> magazine (\u201ca great place for ideas\u201d).\u00a0 It\u2019s a \u2018what if\u2026?\u2019 scenario.\u00a0 The \u2018what if\u2019 being how would the world look after water becomes toxic and global apocalypse ensues.\u00a0 This brings a whole host of problems for Ruby, not least the prospect of having access to her favourite cosmetics seriously compromised.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bathfestivals.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/10\/The-Storm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6622 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bathfestivals.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/The-Storm-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Storm\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Benwell\u2019s debut novel is set in Japan, a country where the suicide rate for teenagers is at epidemic levels.\u00a0 Sora is suffering from ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease. He\u2019s lost the use of his legs and he can\u2019t go to school any more.\u00a0 Increasingly, his thoughts turn on whether in the spirit of the legendary Japanese samurai warriors the time has come to choose how, and when, to die.
