Join acclaimed author Patrice Lawrence for a warm and gentle storytelling event about her debut picture book Granny Came Here on the Empire Windrush and her non-fiction picture book Our Story Starts in Africa. Patrice was born in Brighton and brought up in an Italian and Trinidadian household. She shares her own family stories through the eyes of Ava whose inspirational Granny tells her how she came to England on the Empire Windrush many years ago. And through inquisitive Paloma who goes to visit her family in Trinidad.

Patrice Lawrence was born in Brighton and brought up in an Italian and Trinidadian household. Her debut for young adults YA novel Orangeboy, won the Bookseller YA Prize and the Waterstones Prize for Older Children’s Fiction in 2017 and shortlisted for the Costa Children’s Book Award. Indigo Donut, her second book for teenagers, won the CrimeFest YA Prize. Both books were nominated for the Carnegie Medal as was her follow up Eight Pieces of Silva which also won the CrimeFest YA Prize and the 2021 Jhalak Children’s and YA Prize. Patrice was awarded an MBE in 2021 for services to literature.
