The Secret Diary of John Drawbridge Review

With a brilliant range of characters, an exciting plot and amazing historical facts, this book is unmissable for Horrible Histories fans.

This story is hilarious and action-packed, written by the Roald Dahl funny prize-winning author, Philip Ardagh, and with super contemporary illustrations from Jamie Littler, illustrator of Hamish and the Worldstoppers.

The main character, John Drawbridge, has been sent to Widemoat Castle to train to become a knight. With its towers, dungeons and moats, it is the most exciting place to be for the young knight in training. But with the Welsh planning to attack the castle, things are about to get a lot more dangerous and exciting!

This book really draws you in because of the tremendous imagery, the fantastic quotes and the accurate historical facts.

I would recommend this book for anyone ages 7-11, and certainly anyone who is into Horrible Histories. It is an action-packed read, and I would rate it 10/10! I can’t wait to read more of Philip Ardagh!
