At this year’s Bath Festival, we’ve joined forces with Komedia and Tub Music to present a special show celebrating emerging talent in Bath. In our latest blog, Maisie Lewis introduces us to the artists that will take to the stage on Thursday 20 May.

Champions of local artists, Tub Music have cherry-picked some of the best that Bath has to offer to provide a diverse evening of excellent music at Komedia on Thursday 20 May. Celebrating all genres, but with a definite groovy feel, the night will showcase two amazing solo artists and two wonderful bands all based in the Bath area.

The night will begin with the rich vocals and dreamy slide guitar of Joely. Originally from Oxford, Joely has just begun studying at Bath Spa University, where she has already won their Song of The Year 2020 award. She really is a rising star and is backed loyally not only by her university, but also by BBC Introducing in Oxford. Joely’s music sits comfortably within the singer-songwriter genre, but is also undeniably influenced by indie pop and country, with all of her songs telling a gorgeous, nostalgic story. For fans of Taylor Swift or 70s Fleetwood Mac, you will not be disappointed by the reflective presence of Joely.

Following Joely, we have Jax Beats, a Bath-based multi-instrumentalist and producer originally hailing from Suffolk. With music soaked in groove, you know the night is about to get funky. A constant collaborator, Jax will be building beats live on stage, looping different instruments and having his friends come up there with him to perform their songs together. As well as this, he might even build a beat from scratch and improvise right before your eyes, and whatever he comes up with is sure to feature a banging bass-line and dominant rhythm section. Not limited by genre, Jax Beats is not your average on-stage performer, but it’s this vibrant unpredictability that makes him a real sight to behold.

After Jax Beats we have the incredible Shutterdog. An eclectic 5-piece, Shutterdog blend R&B, neo-soul and math rock in their own beautifully authentic way. Led by the honeyed voice of Amy Greed, Shutterdog effortlessly fuse soul grooves, intricate riffs and create an all round good vibe. They are inspired by a number of spectacular musicians, including Tank and the Bangas, Chaka Khan and Snarky Puppy. Local favourites in Bath and Bristol, Shutterdog know how to move minds and bodies, with their euphoric debut single ‘Make My Waves’ an ode to their relaxed and downright groovy feel. They really are a delight on stage, and are bound to get the crowd moving ready for the evening’s headline act.

Jealous Tina

Jealous Tina are a dazzling neo-soul 5-piece led by the indomitable Rosie Patton, a lady of soulful vocals and luscious saxophone. Accompanying her poetic lyricism and passionate melodies are jazz-infused keys and a rhythm section oozing with groove. Another local favourite, Jealous Tina have not only made waves in the South West, but were recently played on Radio 6Music following the release of their debut EP She Who Leaves Her Guard Down. The group are downright creative, taking inspiration from everyone from Amy Winehouse to Bill Withers. They are effortlessly funky and an absolute pleasure to watch, making the perfect headliner for this night of local talent on one of the best-known stages in Bath.
