James Boyd guitar

Dowland Fantasia DP. 72
Tippett The Blue Guitar
Joseph Phibbs Suite
Dowland A Fancy DP. 5
Britten Nocturnal

Virtuoso guitarist James Boyd is recognised for his lyrical and intensely moving performances and,  for this Bath International Music Festival recital in the historic surroundings of the Old Theatre Royal, he’s chosen a programme that peels back the guitar’s own many-layered history. The concert is framed by music originally for lute by John Dowland, and Benjamin Britten’s haunting reflections on Dowland’s song Come, heavy sleep. Tippett’s The Blue Guitar, meanwhile, draws the listener into an intense reverie upon a Wallace Stevens poem that in turn draws inspiration from Picasso’s ‘blue period’. As tradition belongs to the future as well as the past, Boyd performs a new work by the young British composer Joseph Phibbs, composed specially for him in 2013.
