The Independent Bath Literature Festival Saturday 5 March 2016
By popular demand here’s the list of books that featured in yesterday’s ‘Around The World in 10 Books’ event
First up was my choice of The Story of My Teeth by Valeria Luiselli. A Borgesian collection of mini-tales linked to the narrator’s teeth. (Mexico)
Then came Judith Robinson’s choice of The Kindly Ones by Jonathan Littell. A hard read, but a rewarding one. (France)
We then popped to Iceland for The Pets (Iceland) by Bragi Olafsson (ex-Sugarcubes bassist). A comedy of manners about annoying friends.
Judith selected The Brothers Lionheart by Astrid Lindgren. A children’s book about the biggest subject of all: death. (Sweden)
Then to Judith’s home nation, Germany, for The Swarm by Frank Schatzing. An eco-thriller from one of Germany’s biggest literary stars.
I then went for Death and the Penguin by Andrey Kurkov. A Murakami-esque tale of the mafia, obituaries and a moody penguin (Ukraine)
Judith selected Baudolino by Umberto Eco. Selected before his recent death. Hopefully prompted a few people to try him out. (Italy)
My next choice was To Hell With Cronje by Ingrid Winterbach, a novel about the Boer War translated from the Afrikaans. (South Africa)
Judith’s final choice was Leave Me Alone by Xuecun Murong, a stark and honest account of modern China.
I ended with Yoko Ogawa’s The Housekeeper and the Professor (Japan) the moving tale of a mathematician with no short term memory and his housekeeper.
